The Wendy Project
As part of Croydon Culture Arts celebration of International Women's Day 2025 I was approached by them and asked if I would like to be the lead artist for the event. I was absolutely delighted and asked to submit an idea that would work. I had been thinking about construction a house from tea towels for some time and wondered if this might possibly be the event to realize this ambition. On a train journey to Edinburgh, I started to think about Wendy houses and how perfect this structure would be for using tea towels. I then research the etymology of the Wendy House. In Peter Pan, JM Barrie has the Lost Boys build a temporary structure for an injured Wendy to recuperate in and that's how the The Wendy House was born.
In my Wendy Project I hosted a number of workshops in and around Croydon where groups of women were invited to subvert their own tea towel. I then took all of the tea towels and used them to build the house. As the original Wendy house was a place of safety, I wanted everyone who contributed to the project to be able to view the house we built as a place where the words that they chose to sew onto their tea towels, could say anything that they wanted them too. It was an amazing project which was met with great enthusiasm. The finished item was then incorporated into the collection at Croydon Museum.
